Joseph Armitage Burke, 89, of Orange, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008 at Christus-St.ElizabethHospital in Beaumont. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in the Chapel of Dorman Funeral Home in Orange. Officiating will be Rev. Lynn Ashcraft. Interment will follow in EvergreenCemetery in Orange. A gathering of friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Born on Nov. 22, 1918 in San Antonio to Joseph Webb and Dana (O’Day) Burke, he was a lifelong resident of Orange, he received the community builder award which was presented by the Masons. Burke was the former chairman of the Orange Bank in Orange, and he was an avid runner and race walker where he won the national championship at the age of 70. Mr. Burke was a philanthropist who donated to numerous charitable organizations over his lifetime.
Mr. Burke is preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Mae Murphy Burke. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Jackie Caraway and Liz Bridges both of Orange and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. 
Pallbearers for the service will be Abbie Wilson, Beth Ann Vacek, Delores Sterling, Martha Oliver, Joyce Atkins, Tabitha Lippmann, Betsy Smith and Donnis Cowan.  For those desiring memorial contributions, please make donations in Mr. Burke’s name to a charity of the donor’s choice.
