The state’s No. 11 ranked Dist. 21-3A champion Orangefield Lady Bobcats will take on Dist. 23 champion the La Grange Lady Leopards at 7 p.m. Friday at King Wood Park High School in the Region III area of the girls basketball playoffs.

The Lady Bobcats had a bye in the bidistrict round earier this week. LaGrange defeated Stafford 64-55 in their respective bidistrict playoff game to pit them against the Lady Bobcats.

First year Lady Bobcat head coach Chris Jost heads into the playoffs 22-10 overall and a near perfect 13-1 record in the district standings. Neither Jost, nor the Lady Bobcats, however, are strangers to the state basketball playoffs.  The Lady Bobcats enter the playoffs for their third consecutive season.

Before coming to Orangefield Jost was head coach for Comanche High School and reached the playoffs in all three seasons there with one trip to the regional semifinals. The Lady Bobcats have reached the regional tournament in Huntsville the last two seasons under former head coach Sondra Ancelot. Ancelot accepted the position of assistant head coach for the Lamar Lady Cardinals and Jost replaced her last June.

Senior guard Kaylin Little is the predominate scorer for Orangefield surpassing 2,000 career points on a team that courts several playoff veterans. Senior post Laura Riddick, junior guards Jessica Weldon and Olivia Wagner and junior post Allie Beach all have seen playoff action in previous seasons. Also rounding out the team are sophomore post Aimee Scales, Marisa Wyatt and Shelby Poole.
The Region III playoffs will move along at a brisk pace. The quarterfinals will be played Feb. 18-19 and the semifinal round will take place Feb. 22. The Region III final is Feb. 23.

The 2008 Girls Basketball State Championships will take place Thursday, Feb. 28 – Saturday, March 1 at the Frank Erwin Center on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

Assisting Coach Jost for the Lady Bobcats is Linda Riddick, Jennifer Willis and Kalli Curry.

The school is about a 100 mile trip from Orangefield, but because it is located off of 1960 (and due to rush hour traffic), this could be nearly a three hour trip.  The girls’ team will probably leave at 2:30.
