Lamar University and the Beaumont Foundation of America have announced the 10th Southeast Texas Legends Scholarship – this one honoring Jasper physician, Joe Wesley Dickerson. A private luncheon is planned for Monday, Feb. 25, in the University Reception Center on the eighth floor of the Mary and John Gray Library with a news conference immediately following at 1 p.m.

Dr. Dickerson has served the Jasper community for more than 60 years. In 1964, he built and founded the Mary E. Dickerson Memorial Hospital, named for his late wife. He, along with other colleagues, organized and established the First National Bank in Jasper in 1960. Known for his love of Biblical research, Dickerson was a member of the research team that studied the Shroud of Turin, the reputed burial cloth of Jesus Christ. He was also honored in 2007 by Princeton University for research performed at Saint Catherine’s Monastery on the Sinai Peninsula.

He is a 69-year Master Mason, a 60-year Shriner and supporter of Galveston Shriner’s Hospital.
