The West Orange – Stark High School Future Teachers of America placed in three state events at the FTA State Convention held in Austin recently.

      The WO-S organization earned second place in state honors in both chapter scrapbook and chapter video competition; and WO-S placed third in state in the chapter yearbook competition.

      “This is our third year placing at state. I’m very pleased with this year’s performances because we have qualified to compete in at least one more state competition each of the past three years that this chapter has existed,” Beverly Robinson, WO-S FTA sponsor, said.

      Two students, Adrienne Keegan and Jimicka Brown, also qualified to compete at state in the scholarship competition.

      Twenty-two WO-S students attended the state conference.

      WO-S FTA is comprised of 36 members. They are Chase Adams, Horace Broussard, Jimicka Brown, Kiara Bryant, Mary Cotton, Cedric Dantzler, William Davis, Gabrielle Dugas, Ryyan Edwards, Jamesha Finney, Royale Flore, Carlneshia Gaddis, Andria Gobert, Kwmane Gray, Marion Hardin, Nathaniel Harmon, Ashley Herbert, and Dorian Hardin.

      Also members are Elyssa Hubert, Jariah Jones, Jarvis Jones, Adrienne Keegan, Catherine Long, Jennifer McCain, Trameka Mitchell, Tinesha Mix, Nicolas Reed, Whitley Sinclair, Adrianna Taylor, Andrecka Thompson, Myleshia Tolliver, Clinton Vital, Kevinique Walker, Enrique Warnell, and Kris Welcome.

      Adrienne Keegan has been elected to serve as a Vice President at the District FTA level during the 2008-2009 school year.

      During the 2007-2008 school year, WO-S FTA has worked on projects throughout the West Orange – Cove school system. They have participated in Family Fun Day, “I Care” Night, and the Celebrity Breakfast at North Early Learning Center. They have co-sponsored the Kid’s Cooking School with Anderson and Oates Elementary students at WO-S High School.

      WO-S FTA has also painted signs in support of Red Ribbon Week, worked throughout the District in helper capacities during American Education Week, and they have also participated in activities which recognized and celebrated education / teacher milestones.

      They have also volunteered at the HEB Christmas Festival in Beaumont.

      In the past years, the FTA students have served at District parent involvement meetings and provided child care activities at these same meetings.

      Later this year, WO-S FTA will attend the Lamar Orange and Lamar Beaumont future teachers’ conference.
