Cardinals host CABC baseball thriller
For The Record
It’s baseball season in Cardinal Country and that means it’s tournament time. With two tournaments already under their belt the Bridge City Cardinals host the 2008 Bridge City CABC Baseball Tournament this week, March 6-8, at Cardinal Field.
Poor weather conditions caused the Monday night contest with Silsbee to be rescheduled to Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Silsbee.
CABC tournament action starts Thursday at 11:00 a.m. as the West Orange-Stark Mustangs face Lumberton. Ozen and Kirbyville play at 1:30 p.m. The Cardinals play back-to-back games Thurday facing Ozen and Central. Game one starts at 4:15 and two will commence at 6:30 p.m. (Complete schedule below.)
A new pitcher emerged in the Cardinal lineup during the Bulldog Classic last weekend. Senior left fielder Jaden Dillon pitched a complete game, no hitter against Sulphur, Saturday. That, with two spectacular catches by right fielder Jason Clark and Bridge City downed Sulphur 6-0. Dillon got the win on the hill.
The Cardinal senior allowed just three base runners and sent nine Sulphur batters to the dugout. Meanwhile, Cardinal bats flailed the Tors and Clark snagged two impossible catches, one a stretch beyond the right field fence and the other a diving catch reminiscent of the one he grabbed last season in the Region III quarterfinal round endings the playoffs for Needville.
Bridge City’s sophomore pitcher Matt Hicks went all seven innings, allowed just two hits and struck out 10 batters in his 4-0 shutout of Nederland on Thursday night in game one of the Bulldog Classic.
Head baseball coach Billy Bryant increased his four year career record to 202 wins. Bryant surpassed the 200th win milestone during the Lumberton Baseball Tournament the previous week. The achievement will be recognized by the UIL.
The Cardinals suffered tournament losses to Nederland and Sulphur. Friday, Bridge City let a 6-1 lead slip away in the fifth inning when the Bulldogs narrowed the game to 6-5 and followed with a two run seventh inning to win 7-6. The Cardinals finished the tournament tied 2-2 with Sulphur and host team Nederland.
