A defiant Bridge City Cardinal baseball team punished Needville taking game two of the Region III area series 8-1. Senior pitcher Jason Clark hammered the Blue Jays with 12  strikouts giving up only one hit– a first inning homerun for Needville’s lone score.
Cardinal bats flailed the Blue Jays with 13 hits that included a first inning two run homer by sophomore Matt Hicks that brought in sophomore teammate Joseph Robertson. It was just the beginning.
Needville took game one Thursday evening in extra innings, 2-1. The Cardinals showed up and dismantled their Region III nemesis. The game two victory sets up the series tie breaker Saturday at Humble High School at 2 p.m.
Robertson was 4-for-3 at the plate that included a double, triple and stealthy base running. Cardinal senior Jaden Dillon was 3-for 3 that included a RBI double.
The Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the third inning. Bridge City’s Blake Hubbard singled and first baseman Blake Snyder drove him to second. Dillon’s double  drove in Hubbard. Then pitcher Clark bounced one off the wall for a triple scoring Snyder and Dillon and Big Red was on top 5-1.
In the top of the fourth Robertson turned a solid double into a triple on a Blue Jay error. A sacrifice fly by Hicks carried Robertson across home plate.
After a silent fifth inning Bridge City sophomore outfielder Luke Rhodes doubled in the sixth and reached third when second baseman Eric Mathews singled. A sacrifice fly by Robertson scored Rhodes and Bridge City sat on a comfortable 8-1 lead.
Clark shutdown Needville in the seventh to close out a spectacular performance on the hill.
