Piano students of Carolyn Miller from Little Cypress were recently presented in recital at the chapel of First United Methodist Church in Orange.

Awards were presented to several students at the end of the program for their participation in numerous piano events during the past year of study.

Four students received first division ratings in the Piano Solo Division of the University Interscholastic League Solo and Ensemble contests held in January. Peyton Taylor won a silver medal in the Jr. High School contest held in Lumberton. Brent Bidwell, Kathryn Blackwell and Garhett Bonneaux won gold medals for their Class I Solos at the high school contest held in Baytown. These three students qualified to perform at the State U.I.L. Solo and Ensemble Contest held on Memorial Day at the University of Texas in Austin. Kathryn Blackwell was awarded a first division gold medal, the top award. Brent Bidwell and Garhett Bonneaux received silver medals for their second division ratings on Class I Solos.

Gold Cup Trophies were given for three-year superior ratings in the National Federation of Music Clubs Piano Festival held at Lamar University in Beaumont in March. These students were: Elyse Theriac, 3-year award, Kathryn Blackwell and Lindsey Fontenot, 6-years awards.

Numerous students in April entered the annual Sonatina Festival held at North Orange Baptist Church. The 3-year Mozart Award for superior rating was given to Emily Erb and Jennifer Theriac. The 5-year Beethoven Award was presented to Alyssa Moore, Lindsey Fontenot and Jaycie Dardeau, while Peyton Taylor received the 7-year Bach Award and Kathryn Blackwell, the 9-year Brahms Award.

The following students received the National Piano Guild’s Gold Pin and Certificate awards for their participation in guild auditions held in May at North Orange Baptist Church. They were: Kathryn Blackwell, Garhett Bonneaux, Christopher Cook, Danielle Cook, Jaycie Dardeau, Emily Erb, Grecia Herdocia, Spencer Johns and Jennifer Theriac.

Concluding the program was the presentation of the Outstanding Senior Award Plaques to: Brent Bidwell, David Covey and Candace Theriac by Mrs. Miller.

A reception honoring all students was held in the church’s fellowship hall following the recital.

Mrs. Miller is a member of the National Federation of Piano Teachers and the National Guild of Piano Teachers. She serves as area co-chairman of Sonatina Festival, is a past chairman of National Piano Guild, has served as judge of the National Junior Composer’s Contest for National Piano Guild, 2008 and appeared in the summer issue of the national music publication, “Piano Guild Notes.”
