SBA to close BC centerThe Small Business Administration announced that the SBA’s Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Bridge City will close on Thurday, Jan. 29 at 4:30 p.m.
“SBA custome service representatives will continue to be available at the Disaster Loan Outreach Center to answer questions about SBA’s disaster loan program, explain the application process, help individuals complete their application and close their approved disaster loans until then,” said Manuel R. Gonzalez, District Director of the SBA Houston District office.
Filing deadline to return applications for property damage is Feb. 6. The deadline to return economic injury applications is June 15.

LC Lions Valentine’s dance
John Thibodeaux and the Cheap Whiskey Band will perform at the Little Cypress Lions Club’s annual Valentine’s Charity Dance, on Feb. 7 at VFW Post 2775 on North Texas 87. Doors open at 7 p.m. and close at midnight. Food and drinks will be served, and door prizes will be featured.

Fish for pond stocks
T&D Feed Store, 600 W. Harding St. in Mauriceville; and Tommy’s Fish Truck Co. will host “Fish Day” for pond stocks from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 4. No pre-orders are necessary.
Channel catfish per 100 are: 39 for four to six inches; $59 for six to eight inches and $95 for eight to 11 inches.
For eight- to 11-inch fish, customers should bring their own container and water as the fish are too big to bag. Tommy’s also has bass, crappie, bluegill and hybrid bluegill, redear bream, minnows and koi.

VFW student scholarships
March 2 is the deadline to apply for two scholarships for graduating seniors from VFW Post 2775 and Ladies Auxiliary.
Top prize is $1,000, second is $750. This is not an essay contest. Seniors must be enrolled in local schools or be home-schooled locally. To qualify, a senior must be related to a VFW Post 2775 veteran; be a disadvantaged and related to a veteran; be related to a veteran; be a disadvantaged senior; or be a graduating senior.
A committee of past 2775 commanders will select the winners.

BCHS financial aid workshop
A Bridge City High School senior-parent financial aid workshop will begin at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 in the school library. The program is designed to assist students and parents with the completion of the FAFSA application, as well as inform them of other financial assistance options for college education.
A financial aid representative will be availalbe after the workshop to answer questions.

LIT scholarships deadline Feb. 15
Students who need money to attend Lamar Institute of Technology have until Feb. 15, to apply for scholarship funds for the 2009 fall semester, school officials announced.
The LIT Foundation awarded more than 100 scholarships this spring, with businesses offering about 35 more scholarships to assist students with tuition, fees and other expenses.
“There are scholarships and financial aid for students to attend college,” said Chris Castillo, director of public information and marketing.
Unfortunately, many students do not apply for financial aid, and are not aware what money is available, Castillo said. Now is the perfect time to fill out scholarship forms and apply,” he said.

Locks of Love drive announced
Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Family Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will hold their annual Locks Of Love drive on Feb. 12.
The haircut should be at least six to eight inches in length; 10 is preferred. Certified stylists perform the cut. Clean hair that has already been cut and is stored in a ponytail may also be donated.

Baseball/softball clinic, barbecue
The Cardinal Athletic Booster Club’s annual baseball / softball clinic and barbecue, for players 5-12, will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 31 at the high school’s baseball complex next to the football field on Osborne Drive.
Preregistration will be at the Bridge City Intermediate Cafeteria in conjunction with the Little League baseball sign-ups on Jan. 17 and 24. Registration will also be conducted the day of the event starting at 10:30 a.m. at the ballfield. Tickets for the barbecue will be available for purchase at all times. BCHS selling past yearbooks
Bridge City High School has several copies of the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 yearbooks available for sale. The school also has a few of other years as well. To purchase a yearbook, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call 735-1554 after 2 p.m. The staff has also discovered they are missing yearbooks from 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1965. If anyone could let the school staff borrow books from those years for a few weeks, it would be appreciated.
LU provides free tax assistance
The Lamar University Community Outreach Program has joined with the Internal Revenue Service to increase earned income tax credit (EITC) awareness and education. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is providing free tax preparation for individuals and families, students, senior citizens, and non-English speaking people in Beaumont. The VITA program offers tax assistance to low- to moderate-income residents ($37,000 and below) who cannot prepare their own tax returns.
Tax preparation sessions are scheduled to begin every Saturday starting Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The VITA site for the Beaumont community will be at L.L. Melton YMCA at 3455 Sarah St .
Trained volunteers from the community as well as LU students and staff will help program participants identify special credits, such as the EITC, child tax credit, and credit for the elderly, for which they may qualify.

Bridge City alumni game
Tip-off time for the second annual Glenn Pearson Alumni Basketball Game is 7 p.m. Feb. 2. Bridge City basketball greats Pearson and Troy Woodall will coach, pitting odd-year against even-year graduates. Participants should arrive at 6 p.m. to get jerseys, sign release forms and warm-up. Some 40 players took part last year, and more or expected in 2009. At halftime, members of the 1962-63 playoff team will be honored.
Muscadine pruning workshop
The Orange and Jefferson County Texas AgriLife Extension Service along with Master Gardeners will offer a muscadine pruning workshop from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Feb. 14 at the Piney Woods Winery, 3408 Willow St. in Orange. Everyone is asked to meet at the shop to sign in, then will proceed to the demonstration site. Wine tasting to follow. Bingo games discontinued
Orange VFW Post 2775 on Highway 87 North will discontinue its weekly bingo games. The last games will be played Wednesday, Jan. 28. The post appreciates all the support from players and volunteers over the years.
BCISD needs bus drivers and custodians
Bridge City Independent School District has vacancies for bus drivers. Full-time and part-time needed, commercial driver license required, training available.
Salary is $11.15 per hour plus benefits for four hours per day plus trips.
