The Orange Thrift and Gift Shop now meets at 11 a.m. second Tuesdays at the shop at 350 37th St. The move from the “gym” to the cafeteria is now complete and much nicer. The shop continues its half-price sale and has many mark downs. The quilters are taking orders and have just completed another quilt to sell. The blue, green, yellow and white quilt is done in the Lone Star design and is 94 inches square priced at $350. There are other quilts, starting at $150 and also baby throws and quilts. Buddy Poppy sale
Orange VFW Post 2775 and Ladies Auxiliary members will be out for their annual Buddy Poppy Campaign Friday and Saturday. The Buddy Poppy, trademarked by the VFW, is never sold. It is freely given to anyone who will wear it proudly to honor veterans’ sacrifices. Proceeds taken will be used locally for relief work for veterans and their families. Members will be at Wal-Mart, Kroger and Market Basket.
Small business events
The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Small Business Development Center will present a business start-up workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the LSC-PA Small Business Development Center, 1401 Procter St. in Port Arthur.
The free business seminar covers business plans, funding, employees and taxes for first-time business owners. Attendance at one workshop is required prior to a new business owner’s first one-on-one meeting with a SBDC business consultant.
The SBDC offers individual consulting for small business owners at no charge. The center helps prospective business owners by providing financial analysis, loan preparation assistance and help in setting up a business plan. Reservations are required for all events. Pinehurst annual clean-up
The city of Pinehurst’s annual spring clean-up, free for Pinehurst residents only, will be from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 30 at the MacArthur Shopping Center in the parking lot of the old Sears building. Proof of residency is required through a driver’s licence, water bill or similar ID. Accepted items include wood, furniture and freon-free appliances. Hazardous Materials not accepted include tires, paints, cleaners, antifreeze, car batteries, used oil, insecticides, swimming pool chemicals and gas tanks.
Red Hat Society
The Red Hot Flashers of the Red Hat Society will meet at 11:30 Thursday at Sunset Grove Country Club in Orange. Birthdays to be celebrated are Ruth Fisher and Jacque Phelps. Each lady should bring a small door prize. For more information, call 886-1609.
Early release dates
West Orange-Cove district schools will observe an early release May 28, according to a statement from the district. West Orange-Stark Middle School and West Orange-Stark High School will release at 11:15 a.m. North Early Learning Center will release at 11:45 a.m. Anderson and Oates Elementary campuses will release at noon. Buses will run.
The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Theater Department and the Port Arthur Little Theater will conduct auditions May 26-28 for the cast of their combined summer musical, “Annie Get Your Gun.”
LSC-PA theater director Keith Cockrell said students and members of the community are invited to audition for the show, which has roles for both adults and children.
“We try to make sure that everyone who shows up to audition feels welcome,” he said. “We will teach songs from the show at the auditions. Casting will be as inclusive as the script allows.”
Auditions begin at 7 p.m. at the LSC-PA Performing Arts Center, 1700 Procter St. “Annie” will be staged June 1-3, changed from previosly announced dates. For more information, call Cockrell at 984-6338.
