Fall sports for Orange County high school athletes kicked off Monday as football, volleyball and cross-country teams went into action. Local football squads hit the practise fields in the heat with frequent water breaks.

The West Orange-Stark Mustangs met with head coach Dan Hooks at 8:00 a.m. and hit the field shortly afterward. The Mustangs will host Dayton for their first scrimmage Aug. 15 starting at 6 p.m. The Mustangs will travel to Vidor Aug. 21. Hooks and crew will open the regular season at home against the Nederland Bulldogs Aug. 28.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears will be getting a make-over this season as new head coach Randy Crouch began practices at 4 p.m. The Bears will scrimmage Texas City Aug. 15 beginning at 5 p.m. On Aug. 21 the Bears will rumble with the Silsbee Tigers at home. The Bears open their season against WO-S Sept. 4.

The Orangefield Bobcats will be getting a new look too as Brian Huckabay takes over as head coach. The Bobcats hit the field early in their two-a-day schedule and come back at 5:30 in the afternoon. Orangefield will host Vidor for a scrimmage Aug. 15 starting at 9 a.m. The Bobcats open the season in Winnie when they travel to face East Chambers Aug. 28.

The Bridge City Cardinals hold practise in the mornings preparing to scrimmage at Lumberton Aug. 15 starting at 6 p.m. They will work out against Shepherd away Aug. 20. Big Red will take on traditional season opener opponent Liberty at home Aug. 28.

After scrimmaging Orangefield and WO-S, Coach Jeff Mathews and The Vidor Pirates will open their season against Beaumont Kelly Aug. 28.

Season opener for the Deweyville Pirates will be at home against Sabine Pass.
