They were once the dynamic duo of one of Bridge City’s most notable championship volleyball teams. Former Bridge City Lady Cardinal volleyball standouts, Audrey Myers and Kayla Fullerton, both scored scholarships after a season that brought the Lady Cardinals all the way to the Region III tournament in 2007.

The duo, however, was split as each went off to play for competing college teams.

Myers spent her freshman year with the Galveston College Whitecaps. Fullerton went to Wharton College to become a Pioneer. The former Lady Cardinal teammates came face-to-face twice during the regular season of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) conference. The Pioneers won one and the Whitecaps the other.

But Lady Cardinal head volleyball coach ‘Becca Matthews announced this week that her two former standouts will be reunited on the same side of the net this season.  Fullerton, with the prompting of Myers, will make the switch from Wharton to play for the Galveston Whitecaps this season.

“Together, both girls bring a lot of talent to Galveston College,” Mathews said, “I believe that the Whitecaps made an excellent  decision in having the two of them reunited on the same court. They play well along side each other, and can hold their teammates to a higher standard.”

Unhappy at Wharton, Fullerton began considering her options which included trying out for other Division I teams. “I knew in my heart I was not ready to give up playing the game,” Fullerton said. That’s where her former high school teammate came in.

“Getting Kayla to come to Galveston didn’t take that much work,” Myers said, “Coach Pearce had seen her play during the season and knew her potential. The only thing that took long was the definite answer that she had been added to our roster.”

Finally the notification from the Whitecaps came through. “I was relieved knowing that it was official, that my volleyball career was not over, and I’ll be on the court again with Audrey,” Fullerton said.

“I am very excited about the group of girls that are returning and the incoming freshman this year,” Fullerton said of her new teammates, “I know there will be good things to come from the Galveston Whitecaps volleyball team this season.”

According to Myers, Fullerton will help energize the Whitecaps and be a force up front for the team. “She has an excellent attitude which will help us tons this year. It is something most of the team lacked last season.”

“I believe the Whitecaps will be one of the top teams in conference this season and will be at the regional tournament– with or without hurricanes,” Myers predicts.

The two former Lady Cardinals will begin their first day of practice with the Whitecaps August 10th. Galveston College will open their season Sept. 29 against Lee College.

“I am absolutely thrilled for the both of them,” Mathews said, “They deserve to be rewarded for all of their hard work….I am so proud of them.”Enter your body text here.
