From the summer 2009 graduating class of Lamar State College-Orange, 15 students received honors recognition for their academic achievements.

Three students of Lamar State College-Orange graduated with the designation of summa cum laude, with “highest honors.” Summa cum laude designation includes those students with grade point averages of 3.8 to 4.0. They were Phyllis A. Pousson Crow, Orange, associate of applied science (AAS), liberal arts; Johnanna Gail Jones Landry, Sulphur, La., certificate, vocational nursing; and Nicole Webb Turpin, Buna, certificate, vocational nursing.
Crow, secretary for the Allied Health division, has been an LSC-O employee for the past six years. She began her college career at LSC-O back in the fall of 1989, but took a break after having her second child to focus on family. When she began working at the college, she decided that it was time to return and get her degree. Phyllis enrolled in classes at LSC-O in 2005 and worked diligently to get her degree, and graduate with highest honors, all while working full-time. Although she was very “secretive about finishing her degree,” Gina Simar, Allied Health division director, says, “Allied Health is very proud of our honor grad! Way to go Phyllis!”

Magna cum laude, or “high honors” designation, is awarded to graduates who earn GPAs of 3.65 to 3.79. Three students, Samantha Lynn Ashworth Blevins, Vidor, certificate, vocational nursing; Janelle R. Gross Long, Orange, certificate, vocational nursing; and Valerie Alyse Roberts, Orange, Associate of Arts (AA), teaching 1, earned this designation.

Nine students graduated cum laude, or with “honors” designation, with GPAs of 3.50 to 3.64. They included Amanda K. Musgrove Barlow, Starks, La., AAS, upward mobility nursing; Baileigh Cecilia Chaloupka, Deweyville, certificate, vocational nursing; Kristi Michelle Gunn, Orange, certificate, vocational nursing; Lindsey Michelle Hyatt, Orange, certificate, dental assisting; Kayte Chapman Jessie, Orange, certificate, dental assisting; Belva Ann Henson Linscomb, Orange, certificate, dental assisting; Cynthia Ibanez Rodriguez, Beaumont, AAS, upward mobility nursing; Kayley Michelle Trahan, Orange, associate of science, natural science; and Andrew James Vallery, Sulphur, certificate, vocational nursing.
