Lady ‘Stangs starting strong
The best kept secret in Orange County just might be the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs. The volleyball team is now 12-5, with several big wins already under their belts and a seven game winning streak going strong.
The Ladies have posted big victories over Hemphill, Newton, Kountze, Buna and Kirbyville, but the biggest one came on Tuesday, August 25, when they beat the 4A Lady Pirates in Vidor in three straight games.
“The girls all decided to pull together and play as a team,” Head Coach Gwen Kelly-Hall said. “And there are no attitudes.”
One of the positive things Kelly-Hall did for the team happened last year when she moved her daughter, who is a sophomore, to WO-S. Ashleigh Kelly was raised with a volleyball in her hand and bringing her here has brought a winning attitude to the team.
“Her winning attitude was contagious,” Kelly-Hall said. “Ashleigh knows how it feels to win and the other girls just adopted that attitude.”
Along with Kelly, senior Ishaneka Gant shares the captain duties and both work hard at their positions.
“I’ve always had to work super-duper hard because of my momma,” Kelly said. And the hard work has paid off.
The girls won’t start district until Tuesday, September 22, when they face Orangefield at Orangefield, but until then they still are working hard.
“Orangefield is going to be a big game and one of our toughest opponents,” junior Ryshanequa Winbush said. “We just have to keep our heads on straight and stay focused.”
As they take one game at a time, all three agreed that their goal is to make the play-offs. It’s been several years since that has happened and with hard work, dedication and fan support, it can happen this year.
Also playing for the Lady Mustangs are juniors Johnesha Sims, Kayla Brown and Danyale Thomas, seniors Mishenequa Warnell and Kayla Gonzales and sophomores Crystal Haynes and Jada Simien.
Come out and support the Lady Mustangs. Friday night is open but after that, the Ladies play every Tuesday and Friday, with Friday night games playing where varsity football is and the varsity volleyball team playing first, about 4:30 pm.
