Christus Hospital’s Diabetes Lifestyle Education Program has earned the sought-after Gold Seal of ApprovalTM and was awarded the Disease-Specific Care Certification by The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Led by certified diabetes educators, nurses, and dietitians, Christus Hospital’s diabetes management program provides counseling and educational programs to both children and adults.

To earn certification, a disease management program undergoes an extensive, on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission reviewers every two years. Christus Hospital’s program was evaluated against Joint Commission standards through an assessment of the program’s processes, the program’s ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, and interviews with patients and staff.

“The program has changed my life,” said Kenneth Hamilton, a Beaumont area resident. “I weighed more than 300 pounds and had an A1C level of 8.7 when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in October 2007. My doctor encouraged me to attend the Diabetes Lifestyle Education Program at Christus Hospital where they set me on the path to a healthier lifestyle. I eat well, drink lots of water and try to stay physically active. Two years later, I have lost 88 pounds and I have lowered my A1C levels to 5.8.”

“This certification means Christus Hospital does the right things and does them well for outpatient diabetes education patients,” says Jean E. Range, a registered nurse and executive director of certification
“Christus Hospital voluntarily pursued this comprehensive,

independent evaluation to enhance patient safety and the quality of care we provide,” says Mary Eagen, chief nurse executive of Christus Hospital. “We’re proud to receive this distinction and we thank our committed staff for their help in achieving this recognition.”

The Joint Commission launched its Disease-Specific Care Certification program in 2002. It is the first program of its kind in the country to certify disease management programs. A list of programs certified by The Joint Commission is available at
