Red Hot Flashers Mardi Gras party
The Red Hot Flashers of Orange will meet at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 28 at Madame Rebecca’s home for a Mardi Gras party. Marcie Baca is the birthday princess of the month. Members are asked to bring a salad and a door prize. For more information, call 746-2004.

Plant propagation class
Topics such as stem cuttings, dividing roots, leaf cuttings and rooting enhancement conditions will be discussed at an Orange County Master Gardeners class Saturday at the Orange County Extension Office in Mauriceville. Cost of $15 and can be paid on the day of the class. Participants will leave with plants they propagated during the session. To register, call 882-7010.

Retired teachers’ meeting
Area travel agent Patsy Peck will speak when Orange County Retired Teachers meet Monday at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 401 37th St. Snacks will be provided.

‘Get Wild with the Bears’
   The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Spring Pep Rally will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the LC-M fooball field. LC-M’s spring sports programs will be recognized. The concession stand will be open.

Faith UMC opens its doors
The public is invited to come and experience the new Faith United Methodist Church, now open, at 8608 MLK Jr. Drive, in Orange. An Open House Celebration with hors’ d’ouevres, door prizes and tours of the facility – is slated for 1 – 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 9.

CASA seeks volunteers
Advocates for Children, Inc.  – A CASA program, will hold a volunteer training session 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., Jan. 11-15 (Monday-Friday),  at the Vidor CASA office located at 1091 N. Main, Suite G.

“In Loving Memory” to meet
 The monthly meeting of “In Loving Memory” a support group for mother’s who have lost a child will meet 6 p.m. on Jan.19 at  North Orange Baptist Church located at 4775 16th Street, Orange. They welcome any mother, any age, who has lost a child for any reason.

LCM Senior Bonfire rescheduled
Due to the excessive rainfall, LCM Project Safe Graduation has rescheduled the Senior Bonfire. The new date for the bonfire is Feb. 13.

LIT offers Blackboard® sessions for students

The Distance Education Office at Lamar Institute of Technology is offering Blackboard® orientation sessions for students on Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Multi-Purpose Center.
The sessions are from 10-11 a.m., 2-3 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. Students only need to attend one session.
The seminars are for students who are taking an online course for the first time or who would like some tips on navigating the system.
Attendees will learn how to log on to Blackboard®, use the communication tools within the program, navigate within the learning modules, post assignments online and take quizzes and exams online.

Extended hours for LIT Spring registration

Lamar Institute of Technology will be open extended hours this week for students who need to apply, register or pay for classes.
Departments will be open until 6 p.m. until Thursday, Jan. 7.
The class schedule may be found on the LIT Web site: or on the LIT campus.
Students must be accepted to LIT and must have completed all their testing requirements in order to register. The Spring 2010 semester begins Jan. 11.

“Monday Night Math” offered 
West Orange – Stark Middle School math teachers invite parents of WO-S Middle School students to attend “Monday Night Math” sessions which are offered monthly throughout the school year.
The next session will be Monday, Jan. 11.
WOSMS math teachers will meet with parents to answer questions relating to math concepts. The goal of “Monday Night Math” sessions is to assist parents in helping their children with math homework by reviewing math skills. The information will also be useful to parents in helping their student prepare for the TAKS test.
Monday Night Math session will be held from 5 – 6 p.m. in designated classrooms located on the first floor of the Stark Building. Parents will meet in the cafeteria for a brief time and then report to classrooms.
No children or students will be allowed to attend these “Parent Only” sessions.
Other “Monday Night Math” sessions are scheduled for the following dates: Feb. 8, March 22, April 12, and May 3.

Angel Food Ministries taking orders

 Orders for January Angel Food Ministry reduced price food program are now being taken at St Mark Lutheran Church, 945 W. Roundbunch in Bridge City.  Order deadline is 5 .m., Wednesday, Jan.13.
Various boxes are available ranging in price from $18 for the boneless chicken box to $35 for the seafood pack. The signature box continues to be $30 and the senior/convenience box is $28. Full menus and order forms are available at the back door of the church next to the parking area. 
Return orders by mail or bring to the church from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8.   Lone Star Vouchers will be processed at that time.
Other methods of payment accepted are cash, check or money order.  All payments should be made to St Mark Lutheran Church and is due at the time of order.

Chevron retirees to meet
The latest activities of the Chevron Retirees Association will be discussed in a meeting Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. at JB’s Barbecue on old Highway 90 in Orange. All Chevron, Texaco and Unocal retirees, spouses and guests are invited. Meals are “Dutch treat.”

Annual meeting scheduled for Evergreen Cemetery

The Evergreen Cemetery Association annual meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the offices of the Harmon-Oliver Enterprises, 320 Henrietta Street. The meeting location is west (across the street from) Granger Chevrolet. This meeting will cover, but will not be limited to, election of board members and officers whose terms may be expiring. The meeting is open to the public.

Benefit for Gerald Breaux Jr.

Jerry Breaux had open heart surgery Dec. 8. He does not have medical insurance and will be out of work until he is released from his doctor. A benefit Link Sale will be held 11 a.m. until sold out Jan. 30 in the Market Basket parking lot in Bridge City. Drawings will be held for different prizes. You do not need to be present to win.
