DPS releases name of Capitol shooting suspect
A 24-year-old man, identified as Fausto Cardenas, fired several shots on the south steps of the Capitol, yesterday, with a small-caliber handgun. No one was injured in the incident that occured about 12:15 p.m. Cardenas was immediately taken into custody by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers. He was transported to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.
DPS investigators located a vehicle believed linked to the suspect on the west side of the Capitol Thursday afternoon.
The Texas Rangers are conducting the criminal investigation. No motive in the shooting has been established at this time, but it is believed that Cardenas acted alone. He faces charges of deadly conduct, a third degree felony.
The DPS reminds employees and visitors to the Capitol Complex to be vigilant at all times, be aware of their surroundings and be sure to report any suspicious activity or individuals immediately to Capitol Security at 512-463-3333.
