Arts Council celebrates arts community, supporters at annual event
Suga’s Deep South Cuisine and Jazz Bar will be the setting for a Valentine’s Day treat. Hearts for the Arts, a reception and fund-raiser for the Southeast Texas Arts Council, will take place 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14.
Suga’s will offer Hearts guests sweet and savory morsels to enjoy while they peruse the silent auction, listen to the live music or watch the brief awards ceremony honoring members and supporters of the arts community.
“Each year, SETAC funds $200,000 in arts programming in Southeast Texas ,“ said SETAC Director Sue Bard. “That’s why events like Hearts for the Arts are so important to SETAC. You can see the results in local theater, visual arts, music, dance—all the things that give Southeast Texas the great culture it has.”
One of the most-anticipated parts of Hearts is the silent auction.
Local artists (and some local artists who have gone on to great acclaim in the art world) donate pieces each year to the event. This year is no exception. Guests will be able to bid on pieces by James Surls, Keith Carter, Jerry Newman, John Alexander, Paul Manes and many more. For those not looking for something to hang on the wall, items in the auction include books and donations from area businesses.
Arts and culture can’t thrive without volunteers and boosters, so Hearts for the Arts also recognizes supporters of the arts and humanities. In a brief ceremony, SETAC will present awards to organizations and individuals who helped the arts thrive in 2009. A local artist creates the awards, in keeping with SETAC mission.
The cost for this Valentine’s treat is $25 per person. Suga’s is located at 461 Bowie St. in Beaumont. For tickets, call SETAC at (409) 835-2787.
