A new Renaissance era
Continuing a tradition begun in 1954, then again when it moved to the present location in 1985, Renaissance Hospital-Groves is adding new services and expanding existing operations.
Michael McEachern, CEO since August 2009, said services offered by the acute care facility include an obesity clinic, gastric bypass surgery and lap banding, open heart surgery and a cardiac cath lab.
“We should have a sleep lab open within about two weeks,” he said. “We have an occupational health program and are expanding that to work with area refineries. We can give physicals to new employees, treat minor injuries and do drug-testing. We can assist any plant in getting an employee to work – or back to work after surgery.”
The hospital is locally owned by Mid-County’s S & E group (Steve and EiIeen Nguyen) and features a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week emergency room.
“The hospital had a good run for a number of years but in recent history it went through a series of out-of-town owners and even closed briefly for a time,” McEachern said.
“Now with the local owners we can make decisions right here. The money stays here and it doesn’t go to Houston or anywhere else, and that way we can focus more on the Southeast Texas region.”
Other Renaissance services include bariatrics, cardiology, diabetes education, intensive care, medical imaging, orthopedics, pain management, physical therapy and plastic surgery.
McEachern said he was originally hired as interim CEO, then retained by S & E after his extensive history with acute care hospitals was reviewed.
He worked as an Emergency Medical Technician while pursuing a business degree at Lamar University; then later received a master of science degree in healthcare from the University of Houston at Clear Lake. Originally from Southeast Texas, he has worked in for-profit and not-for-profit groups in Louisiana, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia and Ohio. His sister Sherry Haltom lives in Bridge City.
“It was important to the new owners that they wanted a hospital staff who had ‘been there and done that’ with regard to operations such as this,” he said.
