The education majors at Lamar State College-Orange were ready for the Valentine season. Critical thinking skills and heart-shaped lesson plans went hand in hand for the students wanting to one day become school teachers.

The Introduction to Special Populations education class, held in the Wilson Building, recently prepared learning activities with a heart theme to illustrate their knowledge and use of the lesson cycle with special populations in the classroom. They worked with partners to prepare an activity and presented it by explaining and modeling four steps of the lesson cycle, along with the accommodations and or modifications that would be necessary for a special needs student.

Everything was a “hands-on” project with all students moving to various stations to actually participate in the activities. The students evaluated each other, using critical thinking skills, with a checklist and anecdotal notes. It was a fun learning experience for the students.

Their instructor is Dorraine Babcock.
