Devil’s Pocket
Mary Lawrence Smith James, 69, of the Devil’s Pocket community of Newton County passed away Monday, March 29, 2010 at her residence.  Services to remember her life were Thursday morning in the Chapel of Dorman Funeral Home in Orange.  Officiating was the Rev. Darrell Orange, pastor of the United Pentecostal Church in Deweyville.  Interment followed in the Sudduth Bluff Cemetery in the Nichols Creek community.  

Born on Dec. 22, 1940 in Beaumont, to parents, Jimmy “J.C.” Lawrence and Georgia Kathern (Pachar) Lawrence, Mary had lived in the Devil’s Pocket community since 2005, previously living in Gore, Okla. She had been a member of the Gum Springs Free Will Baptist Church in Gore, Okla.  Mary was a kind-hearted lady who enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting, feeding the birds and taking care of plants.  

Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her sons, Keith Allen “Red I” Smith and Bobby “Cat” Smith; her sons’ father, Bobby Ray Smith; her step grandson, Charles Ray Pedro; and a very special friend, Jean Hart.  

Those who will most cherish her memory are her companion, Richard James of Oklahoma; sons, Tommy Ray Smith and wife, Juanita of Nacogdoches, Jimmy Wayne Smith and wife, Valerie of Devil’s Pocket; sisters, Joan Conn of Beaumont and Dixie McKinley and husband, Ridley of Kountze; 13 grandchildren, 11 great – grandchildren, four stepchildren and numerous step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
