Ruth M. Christian, 84, of Deweyville passed away on Friday, July 16, 2010. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 19 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Dorman Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 20 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. John Fortenberry officiating. Burial will follow at Deweyville Cemetery.

She was a native of Singer, La.; born on Feb. 19, 1926 to parents Jim McBride and Mabel Dillard McBride. She has lived most of her life in the Deweyville area. Her great joy in life was owning and operating “Ruth’s Café” for more than 45 years. She was of the Baptist faith attending Calvary Baptist in Deweyville.

She was well known for her big beautiful hats, which she loved to wear. She loved to go gambling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Allen Christian; daughter, Phyllis “Che Che” Powell; sister, Ivalee Goddard; brother, James McBride.

To cherish her memory are her daughters, Darlene Wilson of Deweyville, Betty “Tootsie” Hryhorchuk of Deweyville; son, Ellis “Tiger” Shoemake and wife Lois of Deweyville; brothers, Melvin McBride of California, Rayburn McBride and wife Donna of Kansas, Kenneth McBride and wife Phyllis of Louisiana; grandchildren, Raven, Chance and Talon Shoemake, Ruth Hryhorchuk, Ramona Summers and husband Rick, Leonard “Bubba” Powell and wife Kim; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Marissa Powell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Organ, Shane Strickland, Leilani Strickland, Raven Shoemake, Chance Shoemake and Talon Shoemake. Honorary pallbearers are Shirley Brown and Ruth Hryhorchuk.
