Orange County high school football squads will test their talents against area opponents in scrimmage action starting this weekend.

High hopes are riding on the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears under second year head coach Randy Crouch. Coach Crouch is returning starters in key positions including quarterback Hunter Gonzales and will certainly be a contender in the traditionally tough Dist. 20-4A.

The Battlin’ Bears will hit the road in their first two scrimmages. LC-M will take on the Class 5A Brazoswood at Deer Park, Saturday, Aug. 14. Varsity starts at 7 p.m, JV and freshmen earlier. On Thursday, Aug. 19, LC-M will face the Silsbee Tigers.

The Bears open the regular season against Goose Creek Memorial, Thursday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at Baytown Stallworth Stadium.

In his 30th season as West Orange-Stark head coach, Dan Hooks will stampede the Mustangs to Dayton for scrimmage action on Saturday, Aug. 14. Varsity squads butt heads at 7 p.m., JV and freshmen earlier. WO-S will host the Vidor Pirates on Thursday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m.

The Mustangs open the season against the Nederland Bulldogs Aug. 27 and don’t plan on finishing until almost Christmas.

The Bridge City Cardinals under fourth year head coach Cris Stump will scrimmage Lumberton in Larry Ward Stadium, Aug. 14, freshmen and JV starting at 9 a.m. Varsity Big Red starts at 10 a.m. On Thursday, Aug. 19, the Cardinals go on the road to scrimmage the Jasper Bulldogs at 7 p.m.

The Cardinals will have a non-traditional debut hosting Sheppard Aug. 27. For the past decade-plus Bridge City has opened their season against the Liberty Panthers. Coach Stump and crew are looking to follow up on their playoff run last season.

In his second season Coach Brian Huckabay and the Orangefield Bobcats will test their talents against the Vidor Pirates at 9 a.m, Aug. 14 in Vidor. The Bobcats will scrimmage Huffman on Thursday, Aug. 19. The Bobcats open the season on the road against East Chambers, Aug. 27.

The Deweyville Pirates take on Hamshire-Fannett Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. and host Buna Aug. 20. Deweyville opens the season at home against Sabine Pass.

The Vidor Pirates intend to take another trip to the playoffs this season travelling to Texas High on Aug. 27.
