Lynda N. Neel, 59, a longtime resident of Deweyville, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010 at her sister’s home in Deweyville, surrounded by the loving care of her family after a courageous struggle with cancer. In keeping with Lynda’s wishes of simplicity, graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8 at the Trout Creek Cemetery in the Trout Creek community of Newton County with the Rev. David Zeigler, pastor of the Old Salem Baptist Church, officiating.

Born on July 7, 1951 in Newton to her parents, L.C. Matthews and Vera Faye (Williams) Matthews, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters. Lynda worked as a housekeeper and had previously worked as a checker for Wyatt’s Cafeteria in Orange. Lynda also enjoyed fishing, crocheting, sitting on her porch enjoying a cup of coffee and visiting with friends.

Lynda is preceded in death by her father and those who will most cherish her memory are her daughter, Belynda Smith and husband, Dallas of Orange; mother, Vera Bowman of Call; sister, Brenda Matthews of Deweyville; two brothers, Glenn Matthews of Call and Lynn “Wormslapper” Mathews of Deweyville; and her three granddaughters, who are her pride and joy, Lindsey Smith and her fiancé, Josh Payne, Abigail Smith and Kaitlyn Smith. Lynda is also survived by numerous extended family.
