OFHS Library Club and Theatre Troupe host ‘Socks for the Needy and Homeless’
The Orangefield High School Library Club and Theatre Troupe members are hosting a “Socks for the Needy and Homeless” drive. They are collecting new pairs of socks from now until Jan. 15, 2011. The socks will be donated to the sheltering organizations here in Orange County to specifically help those ill or in need here at home. 2011 pound weight loss challenge issued
Greg the trainer has initiated a challenge to Bridge City and Orange County residents to lose 2011 pounds collectively from Jan. 1, 2011 thru April 1, 2011. He is providing full support for individual success and has prizes from the community to be awarded each month for the greatest monthly loser. Unclaimed BCHS Graduation Photos
The Counselor’s Office at Bridge City High School has graduation photographs of prior students who ordered picture packages but failed to pick them up. You may visit our website at www.bridgecityisd.net for a list of students for whom we have pictures or call 409-735-1539 for more information. Pictures will be discarded after Jan. 31, 2011.
Stark Museum to host medieval Book of Hours
The Stark Museum of Art will exhibit selected medieval Books of Hours (prayer books with illustrations enhancing the text) from its collections until Jan. 8. The Books from the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries feature glorious handpainted illustrations, including Christmas imagery.
BCISD enacts the Child Find/Child Serve program
Child Find/Child Serve is a requirement for school districts to regularly identify, locat and appropriately place children and students with special needs. Bridge City ISD wants to effectively meet these requirements. The community is encouraged to Call the Bridge City ISD Special Education Office at 735-1628 if they know of a child or young adult, ages 3-21, with a special need.
Chevron Retirees Association to meet
The Chevron Retirees Association will meet Monday, Jan. 10 at 11:15 a.m. at Robert’s Steakhouse, 3712 W. Park Ave., in Orange. All Chevron, Texaco and Unocal retirees, spouses and guests are cordially invited to attend this meeting for a good “Dutch treat” meal, fellowship, and an update on the latest activities of the CRA.
OC Retired Teachers Association to meet
The January meeting of the Orange County Retired Teachers Association will be held on Monday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church,401 37th Street, Orange, Texas.
The guest speaker will be Dr. Roy Stanford of the Orange County Agri-Life Extension Agency. He will speak on the programs of the agency with special emphasis on the Master Gardener Program.
Members of OCRT are requested to bring children’s books for our TRTA book drive.
Texas Classroom Teachers Association to meet
The District 5 Coordinating Council of Texas Classroom Teachers Association (TCTA) will be meeting Tuesday, Jan. 11. Members of TCTA are invited to attend this meeting which will be held at the La Cantina Mexican Restaurant in Beaumont, Texas. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature the current TCTA State President, Brad Willingham. Income tax assistance available
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Tax Filing Assistance Program will be offered starting at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2 at the Orange Public Library. Trained volunteers will be available from 12:15 to 4:00 p.m. every Wednesday through Friday through April 13 and Thursday, April 14. Anyone seeking assistance should bring the following

Record of capital gains and losses
Receipts of medical expenses taxes paid, interest paid, contributions, casualty and theft losses, job expenses, sales tax receipts for major purchases and Social Security cards for dependents.
Also a copy of 2009 tax return (A copy of the 2009 is return is very helpful to the volunteers assisting in the preparation of the 2010 return).
Electronic filing will be available. No tax returns will be started after 4 p.m.
OC Retired Senior Citizens to meet
The Orange County Retired Senior Citizens will have their regular meeting on Monday Jan. 10 at The Salvation Army Bldg. on MLK. The meeting will start at 10 a.m. All members plan to be on time. Glenn Pearson Alumni Basketball game set for Feb. 5
Any graduates who played Varsity basketball for Bridge City High School are invited to play in the fourth annual Glenn Pearson Alumni Basketball Game on Saturday Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. The game will be held in the BCHS competition gym; players are encouraged to get there early to sign in, get a jersey, and STRETCH.
There will be a ceremony at halftime honoring the 10-year anniversary of Bridge City’s 3rd ever playoff team from the 2000-2001 season. Team members include: Luke Wolfford, Anthony Acosta, Milton Briggs, Tyler Briggs, Robert Bush, Kevin Duplechin, Chris Goodyear, Ben King, Jamey Knight, Matt Morgan, Shay Psencik, Michael Reeh, and Kevin Vincent. Mangers include: Kevin Beasley, Langston Fults, Jeff Kendall, Morris Norman, Jake Shatto and Dustin Travino. The Assistant Coaches were: Troy Woodall and Rick Deutsch.

Downtown Orange to host Art in the Park
The 9th Annual Art in the Park Festival will be held in Downtown Orange on March 26. Early registration is encouraged and invitations have been mailed. Artists and crafters will line up along the inside and outside edges of Stark Park on Green Ave. for a day of display, demo and selling of artworks. Local, area and regional participants tend to enjoy this early season outdoor event. Blues and jazz bands perform on stage throughout the day. Food vendors offer tasteful items to refresh everyone. Kid’s Alley offers children hands-on activities they may take home.

LIT hosts early childhood conference
Lamar Institute of Technology Workforce Training Department will host “Building Quality Care for Young Children,” an early childhood conference, from 7:15 a.m.-5 p.m. on Jan. 8.
The conference provides eight clock hours for both caregivers and administrators/directors.
The caregiver track will be at the Multi-Purpose Center at LIT, 802 E. Lavaca. The administrator/director track will be at the Beeson Building on the campus of LIT, 855 E. Lavaca.
Cost is $25 for caregivers and $35 for administrators/directors.
Lakeshore Learning Materials will provide door prizes.

LIT registering for spring semester
Lamar Institute of Technology is registering new and current students for the spring 2011 semester.
The class schedule can be found online at www.lit.edu/. Copies of the class schedule are also available on campus.
Students who are currently attending LIT may register using the Banner system online.
The Spring semester begins Jan. 10.
Student Services will be open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. through Thursday, Jan. 6, and will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7. Student Services will be open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Jan. 10-14, and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Jan. 15.
LIT will be offering the nurse aide program in the spring. This program will give students hands-on experience at healthcare facilities and educate them in basic biology and health.
There is an emphasis on safety regulations, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, infection control, and patient care. Upon completion of this program, students will be eligible to take the State of Texas Nurse Aide Certification Examination.

Wells of Agape offering temperament classes
Temperament Classes are being offered by Wells of Agape for six weeks 7-8 p.m. every Monday night at Family Worship Center at 2300 41st at the old Bancroft School room #35. Classes start Jan. 10.
Relationships with loved ones or co-workers can be improved by learning about their temperaments. It is also a means of learning to know yourself. It helps you to work with others rather than try to change them and it helps deal with people more patiently.
