Chase Hogan, one of the teenagers who was critically injured in an accident that killed his friend, is responding to treatment and receiving support from staff and students at Deweyville High School, according to Deweyville School superintendent Rick Summers.

Michael Miller died when the vehicle he was driving overturned and struck a tree on FM 4203 in Deweyville.

Troopers say Miller, 16, of Deweyville was driving at an unsafe speed, when the vehicle went into a ditch, rolled and struck a tree.

Miller was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont, where he was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson.

The passenger, Chase Hogan, 16, of Orange, was flown by medical helicopter to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, where he is on life support, according to troopers. Hogan is the son of Det. Sgt. Chad Hogan of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

According to troopers, it’s not known if either of the teens were wearing seatbelts.
