Punxsutawney Phil, the weather predicting groundhog, made his appearance Feb. 2, in Punxsutawney, Pa., and reportedly did not see his shadow; the Groundhog Club has proclaimed that winter ended on groundhog day as a result.

According to folklore and legend, Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated on Feb. 2 in the United States and Canada.

If skies are cloudy, when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter-like weather will soon end.

If it’s sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and return to its burrow, and winter weather will continue for 6 more weeks.
