They came close but close wasn’t enough as the Orangefield Lady Bobcats fell to the Smithville Lady Tigers, 50-43, in the Region III quarterfinals at Klein High School on Tuesday.

The Lady Bobcats came within three points in the third quarter but Smithville out-paced Orangefield in the fourth quarter to earned a trip to the Region III girls basketball tournament at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville this weekend.

Smithville led Orangefield 11-6 in the first period. Scoring for Orangefield was Marissa Wyatt with three points getting the bucket once and hitting from the free throw line. Ashton Wagner hit for two points and Morgan Moss also scored a point from the free throw line.

The Lady Tigers increased the score to 24-16 in the second quarter putting 13 points on the board. The Lady Bobcats managed just eight points, four from Wyatt, five for Kacy Juneau and two from Meagan Burton.

The Lady Bobcats came back blazing after intermission as Wyatt scored 10 points including a three pointer. Wagner added two points and Juneau three, narrowing Smithville’s lead to just three points, 36-33.

But Smithville put up 13 points in the final period to 10 points for the Lady Bobcats, seven from the free throw line.

Leading the scoring for the Lady Bobcats was Wyatt with 21 points in the contest followed by Juneau with 10. Wagner was good for five points, Lopez had four points, Meagan Burton had two points and Moss had one.

Smithville’s Blakely Saunders hit for four three pointers against Orangefield.
