Sims’ Sassy Sisters, an Orange County Relay for Life team comprised of teachers and staff from Sims Elementary in Bridge City, will return to the American Cancer Society (ACS) signature event for their fourth consecutive year.

The team is one of many school teams, as well as business, family, and church teams which will relay at “Teaming Up Against Cancer 2011” to be held at Bridge City High School’s Larry Ward Stadium from 6 p.m. Friday, May 6 to 6 a.m. Saturday, May 7.

The ACS fundraiser allows participates to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember those who have lost their battle with the disease, and fundraise to find a cure.

Relay for Life teams consist of eight to 15 individuals who are required to raise $100 per team member.

Sims’ Sassy Sisters, with 25-plus members, is actually comprised of two teams: Sims’ Sassy Sisters Team 1 and Sims’ Sassy Sisters Team 2.

The team is co-captained by are Gina Cessac and Glynis Gothia.

“Participating in Relay is a personal decision. Almost every person on our team has been affected by cancer in some way. Many have family and friends who are survivors or who have lost their lives to cancer. Those who haven’t been affected walk in support of their friends and family who have been,” Gothia said.

The team also has one member who is a cancer survivor, Pat Doucet.

Relay for Life is a fun night mixed with a lot of emotion, Gothia said.

“The survivor lap and the luminary ceremony help to remind us what Relay is all about. Then throw in all of the fun activities and you have a night filled with fun, laughter, and tears, all in the name of a good cause. Our team has so much fun participating in the activities and just sitting around the tent talking and keeping each other awake,” she said.

Activities include cake walks, a race, a mock beauty contest, line dancing, and other games.
Gothia also said that the Sims’ Sassy Sisters participate in Orange County Relay for Life fundraisers, and also hold their own.

“We always try to have one big fundraiser that the students will enjoy. In the past, we have had ‘Kiss the Pig’ and ‘Duct Tape the Principal to the Goal Post’ contests. These raised a lot of money and the students really enjoyed them,” she said.

The team also holds hat and picture days, as well as a bake sale at Open House.

“Last year we held our first mini Relay for Life at school for the students to participate in. The students raised money and then walked the track at school. There were also fun activities for them to participate in. It was such a success that we are planning to have one again this year,” Gothia said.

The Sims’ Sassy Sisters teams are two of 80 teams already signed up to participate in the 11th Orange County Event. Teams interested in becoming involved in Relay for Life may register at the next Team Captain meeting scheduled for Monday, March 21, at the West Orange – Stark Elementary cafeteria (2605 MLK Dr.).

Teams may also register on-line at HYPERLINK “” or by contacting Jackie Burleson at 835-2139.
The deadline for teams to register is April 1.

Last year, 109 Orange County Relay for Life teams raised more than $249,365.

This past fall, the Orange County Relay for Life was recognized by the American Cancer Society with the High Plains Division Choice Award. The award recognizes outstanding volunteer involvement and fundraising.

Gothia said, “It has been a great experience participating in Relay, and Sims’ Sassy Sisters will continue to support Relay for Life. This year will be sad year for our team because it will be the last year we participate under the name Sims’ Sassy Sisters. Our school will no longer exist after this year because we are merging into one new school, Bridge City Elementary. But no matter what name change we make, we will still be involved in this wonderful event.”
