West Orange – Stark Elementary School students learned science while meeting and learning about Maxine the barred owl during a recent classroom visit.

Maxine, handler Mel Moreau, and Eunice Barrett, from ShangriLa Botanical Gardens & Nature Center visited Sandi Meche’s WO-S Elementary second grade class.

Moreau and Barrett presented information about owls, as well as their food chain.
Students were then able to dissect an owl pellet and identify the bones of rodents, shrews, moles, and birds by comparing bones found in the dissection with a bone chart. The students could then determine the owl’s food source for that particular pellet.

“The students were thrilled to be able to see Maxine up close. They loved the hands on experience and were just captivated by the whole presentation,” Meche said.
