Jean Evelyn Marsh Thayer was born May 28, 1914 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was the only child of Annie Maude Atkinson and Stark Adams Marsh. Jean died peacefully June 24, in Beaumont, Texas.

Jean earned a degree from Drake University and taught Physical Education at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa prior to June 1, 1944, when she married the love of her life, Lt Francis Newton ‘Newt’ Thayer, Jr. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Jean enjoyed spending time with Newt, shopping, eating out and traveling to many different countries with Newt over the years. She also liked to keep up with current fashions and enjoyed dressing to the nines.

Jean was preceded in death by parents and son Kenneth Charles Thayer.

She is survived by her husband, Francis N “Newt” Thayer, Jr.; children, Francis N “Frank” Thayer III and wife, Rosemary, of Houston; David Marsh Thayer of Houston; daughter-in-law, Rose Etta Yocum Thayer of Orange; grandchildren, Francis N “Mark” Thayer IV and wife, Tammy Sue, of Houston; Sean T. Thayer and wife, Jennifer, of Lakeville, MN; Jennifer Erin Thayer Knight and husband, Sam, of Orlando, FL; Christi Jean Thayer Kovatch and husband, Christopher, of Orange; and Rose Lorraine “Lori” Thayer Briggs and husband, 2nd Lt. Matt, of Killeen.

She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Austin Thomas, Heather Anne, Hannah Macaslin and Spencer Allan Thayer of Houston; Adam Thomas, Francis N V, and Jane Elizabeth Thayer of Lakeville, MN; Cinnone Alexandra, Gethin Ieuan James, and Gwyneth Rose Knight of Orlando, FL; Christopher Jackson, Christanna Rose “Rosie” and Christon Thayer Kovatch of Orange.

A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to a charity of your choice.
