Students learn about oil spills with experiment
Students from Daphne McIntire’s 8 th grade science classat St. Mary Catholic School, used an experiment to investigate oil spills.
Students learned by dropping oil in water how far oil can expand on the surface of a body of water. They also learned that oil is less dense than water, and for this reason, it floats on water.
The students devised ways to clean the oil from the water. Some suggestions made were to use coffee filters, coffee filters with sand, or coffee filters with rice.
