LSC-O technical program receives TSSB recognition

LSC-O technical program receives program recognition from TSSB
The Process Operating Technology Associate of Applied Science degree at Lamar State College-Orange received program recognition from the Texas Skill Standards Boards (TSSB)on May 24.
The program was recognized as being integrated with the statewide, industry-defined Chemical/Refining Process Technician Skill Standards. Edgar Burns, program director of Process/Industrial Technology, integrated the skill standards into the curriculum and applied for program recognition, for which LSC-O received a $2,000 Skill Standards-Based Curriculum Development Project Award.
The award was administered by Del Mar College, out of federal Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act funds from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
“This award certified that Lamar State College-Orange meets recognized industry standards for process operating technology at any facility in the state of Texas,” said Burns. “LSC-O continues to provide students with excellence in education and is a great place to get a degree.”
The skill standards enhanced program will benefit both employers and graduates. Graduates will gain the work competencies, skills and knowledge that employers have agreed are required for success as process technicians. Employers, in turn, will gain a more qualified workforce. The Chemical/Refining Process Technician Skill Standards define the knowledge, skills and abilities that are required for entry-level process technicians in the chemical, oil and gas production, refining and exploration, pharmaceutical, timber and power generation industries, among others. The standards were developed and validated by technicians working in companies of varying sizes and in representative industry sectors across the state.
Participating technicians represented major Texas employers, such as Albemarle Corporation, BASF FINA, British Petroleum Exploration and Production, Celanese, Chevron Philips, CITGO Petroleum Corporation, DuPont, Dow Chemical, Eastman Chemical, ExxonMobil, Marathon Ashland Petroleum, Shell Chemical Company, Baker Energy and several others.
Recently, the standards were reviewed and revised to reflect updated work practices in the field. The standards may be viewed in the Texas Skill Standards Repository on the TSSB website at www.tssb.org/texas-skill-standards-repository. The Gulf Coast Process Technology Alliance (GCPTA), an industry-driven coalition of employers and educators of process technicians, oversaw the skill standards development and validation process. The GCPTA was established in 1996 to establish standards for process technology education that meet industry’s needs and to increase the availability of process technicians in the chemical and refining industries along the Gulf Coast.
The program’s industry advisory committee, which consists of representatives from companies such as Invista S.a’.r.l., Lanxess Corp., E.I. DuPont, Firestone Polymers, and others supported the curriculum changes.
“This Texas Skills Standards Board recognition is strong evidence of Lamar State College-Orange’s commitment to build a skilled, competitive workforce in our local area,” said David Mumbach, Industry Advisory Committee Chair.
The TSSB is an 11-member advisory board to the governor and the legislature, established in 1995 by the legislature and initially appointed in 1996 by the governor. The TSSB is composed of seven businesses and industry members, two labor representatives, one secondary representative and one post-secondary representative. The TSSB’s mission is to develop a statewide system of industry-defined and industry-recognized skill standards for sub-baccalaureate occupations with strong employment and earnings opportunities.
