At about 7:10 pm. Thursday, June 21, Orange County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible drowning at the Lakeview sandbar in Vidor. Upon arrival, deputies were advised that several young adults were swimming in the Neches River.

Witnesses on the scene told police that one of the swimmers became weak, and was unable to stay above water. Other swimmers attempted to help the victim, but he continued to struggle, pulling those attempting to help under water. The victim eventually went under water, and never resurfaced.

Search efforts continued late into the night for the victim, who is reported to be 19 year old Jefferson County resident, Mikheal Mashiah.

OCSO, Vidor Fired Dept., Little Cypress Fire Dept., and TPWD are helping continue with the recovery effort.

More details will be released as they become available.
