Orange County man’s death ruled suicide
A 45-year-old Orange County man set himself on fire Saturday night at a private hunting club in the Northwest portion of Jasper County. Justice of the Peace Ronny Billingsley has ruled the death as a suicide.
Jasper Co. Sheriff Mitchell Newman received a call around 9 p.m. Saturday. The Sheriff’s Office was told the Newell Shipley was drinking and was threatening to hurt himself.
Upon arrival, the deputies found a pile of brush and wood on fire. A new truck Shipley recent purchased was at the scene but Shipley was not immediately found by first responders. The fire had spread, burning up approximately six acres.
Local firefighters were able to extinguish it and later found Shipley’s body with a gas can near by. He had apparently made a bush pile and stacked wood by his body before starting the fire.
