Firefighters from the City of Orange Fire Dept., had a quick response time to an apartment fire at about 12:05 pm, Thursday, Feb. 14. Fire crews responded to the fire in 27 seconds, after the incident occurred while an engine was across the street.

Engine 5 responded to a person having chest pains in the 500 block of Burton St. The engine crew were assisting Acadian Ambulance with loading the patient into the ambulance, when a call came in about an apartment on fire across the street. The crew went to the area and found a two-story apartment building with smoke coming from the second story window of the building.

Fire crews learned that a woman and her two small children who live there, were already outside the apartment, and Orange Police evacuated the rest of the building.

The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but may involve a child playing with a lighter or matches.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the mother and children.
