Mauriceville Elementary fifth grade teacher, Mary Kay Berndt, sponsors the school’s student council, made up of fourth and fifth grade representatives. Friday, May 17, those students had the opportunity to visit the Orange County Courthouse. Jeannine Denman, Administrative Assistant to County Judge Carl Thibodeaux, and Jill Shores, Personnel Director for the County, welcomed the group and began their tour with several of the historical markers located on the front lawn of the Courthouse. As one might imagine, the cannon was a favorite of the nine and 10 year olds.

Following the obligatory photo on the courthouse steps, the students hiked up the stairs to the 128th courtroom where Brenda Blohm, Chief Juvenile Probation Officer, and Judge Troy Johnson, County Court at Law #2 spoke to them about what happens to the 10 through 17 year old kids who find themselves in juvenile court due to their poor choices. After these and other presentations, the students continued their tour and ended their trip with a picnic lunch.
