At approximately 6:08 pm on Tuesday evening, there was a three vehicle crash on FM 92 at Mormon Church Rd in Hardin County.

A 1997 Dodge truck was driving southbound on FM 92. A 2005 Toyota passenger vehicle was stopped at the intersection of FM 92 and Mormon Church road. A bicyclist was traveling on the southbound shoulder of FM 92. The driver of the 1997 Dodge truck left the roadway for an unknown reason striking the cyclist and then struck the Toyota passenger vehicle.

The cyclist, 48 year old Elton Joseph Mire of Silsbee, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Kathy Simpson. Mire was not wearing a bicycle helmet. The driver of the Toyota, 48 year old Shelly Smiley of Silsbee, was transported to St. Elizabeth in stable condition. Two passengers in the Dodge truck, ages 3 and 9, were also transported to St. Elizabeth in good condition with minor abrasions. Both children were from Lumberton and it is not known if they were properly restrained by a seat belt or child passenger safety seat. The driver of the Dodge truck, David Reckaway of Evadale, was not injured in the crash.

This is an ongoing investigation and further details will be released as it becomes available.
