Velma Rae Brunell

Velma Rae Brunell, 86, of Groves and a former longtime resident of Bridge City, passed away Friday, September 27, 2013, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in Groves, Texas.

Funeral services will be 2pm, Monday, September 30, 2013, at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City. Officiating will be Reverend Phil Croft. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens near Bridge City.

Visitation will begin at 1pm, Monday at the funeral home.

Born in Livingston, Texas, on October 18, 1926, Velma was the daughter of Carl Baker and Lucy (Cockrell) Baker. She worked as a clerk at Howards Superette and enjoyed dancing and going out to eat with her husband. Velma loved her dogs, Peanut, Penny, and Patty; and treasured the time spent with her family; especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Brunell; sister, Jeanette Raley; and brother, James Baker. Velma is survived by her daughter, Janet Champagne and husband, Richard; grandchildren, Jake Champagne and fiancée, Kathy Parker, Logan Champagne and wife, Amy; great-grandchild, Andrew “Little Bit” Champagne; and brother, Tommy Baker and wife, Bessie.

Serving as pallbearers will be the staff of Magnolia Manor Nursing Home.

The family would like to thank Odyssey Hospice for the gentle care they provided. The family would also like to send their heartfelt thanks to her extended family, the staff of Magnolia Manor, for the 13 years of loving and compassionate care. She loved you all.
