Several homes in the Gulf Rd. and Scales Ln. areas had to be evacuated Wednesday due to a gas leak. Clint Hodgkinson, with the Orange County Sheriff's Office said that the leak began about 8:45 am, at a well site on Gulf Rd. in Orangefield.

Company officials who own the well site said that because of the rain and humidity from the thunderstorms in the area, along with the long duration of the leak, the gas is not dissipating. As a result, about 16 households living near the site were evacuated and asked to stay away from their homes overnight.

The company that owns the well site told authorities that they intend to have the leak under control on Thursday.
