The Lamar University Division of Student Engagement has planned a full week of back-to-school activities for new and returning students. Week of Welcome will commence on Friday, Aug. 22, with residence hall move-in, brunch, free hot links and snacks, and a pool party in the afternoon. The week of activities will culminate on Saturday, Aug. 30, with a student tailgate party at Provost-Umphrey Stadium prior to cheering on the Lamar Cardinals as they take on the Grambling State Tigers in the season’s home football game opener.

“Our goal is to get students excited about returning to school, while creating some school spirit to get the semester started off right,” said Baraka Crayton, LU director for residence life. “We want the students to get a glimpse of all the activities and resources available to them at Lamar.”

The Lamar drum line will be on hand on the first day of residence hall move-in to “drum-up” school spirit and provide some entertainment relief for the demanding task of moving into the residence halls.

New students and parents will also have the opportunity to meet Lamar University president Kenneth Evans at 11:00 a.m.

that day.

Dr.

Evans deems it a priority to personally welcome students to Lamar.

Several Lamar athletes, student government association leaders and fraternities and sororities will join the new and returning students to assist their move-in efforts and encourage the newest cardinals to get acquainted with the more than 250 student organizations available on campus outside the classroom.

Other events scheduled for the week include a three-on-three basketball tournament, First Week Follies Variety Show, movie nights, ice cream socials, campus job fair, student organization fair and an opportunity to cuddle and hold therapy dogs and cats for students who had to leave their beloved pets behind.
