Lamar Alum takes top spot in Marine Corps Marathon

Former Lamar cross country standout Samuel Kosgei took the top spot in the Marine Corps Marathon hosted in Arlington, Va. and Washington D.C. on Sunday.

In just his third 26.2-mile race, Army Spec. Kosgei ran the marathon in two hours, 22 minutes and 12 seconds to garner first place. The run had 30,000 entrants along with 3,710 active duty military personnel.

Originally from Uganda, Kosgei was the 2008 Southland Conference cross country champion, and led his team to three-straight league titles in his tenure at LU. In 2006, the Junction City, Kan., native was named the SLC Newcomer of the Year.

Second place went to Army Spec. Laban Sialo with a 2:23:48 time in his first marathon.
