The city of Pinehurst may have lost the Conn's store, but they're gaining a Planet Fitness instead.

It was announced at the last meeting of the Pinehurst City Council on Feb. 10 Planet Fitness was moving in to the old Market Basket store in the Orangehurst Shopping Center..

“We will be hurt on city sales tax by the closing of Conn’s, but Planet Fitness will be opening in about two months and they should make up a good bit of the loss generated by Conn’s closing,” said Joe Parkhurst, city administrator said at the council meeting.

He added there's not sales tax on memberships sold, but there's sales tax for the city on other items sold in the club. He hopes that Planet Fitness will lure other businesses to the shopping center.

Nikki Butler, general manager with Planet Fitness in Groves, said she will be opening the club in Orange sometimes this Spring. She added that she is “really excited” about the opportunity.

She said the company will use the entire space and offer cardio equipment, strength equipment, free-weights, circuit rooms, men and women locker rooms and tanning beds.

There will also be a strength trainer offering classes at the club or members can design their own programs.

Butler has been with Planet Fitness for one and-a-half-years.

“It's a great company to work for,” she said.
