Tuesday, June 16, at about 2:10 p.m., an inmate in the Orange County Jail was found attempting to commit suicide by hanging himself. Corrections and nursing staff were able to perform life saving measures until first responders from the Orange Fire Department and an Acadian Ambulance arrived on scene. He was revived and found to have a heartbeat. He was then taken by ambulance first to the Baptist Hospital in Orange and then later to Baptist Hospital in Beaumont, where he remained overnight. During treatment at the hospital, he eventually succumbed and was pronounced deceased at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, June 17.

The man is identified as 25 year old white male Brandon Mayo of Orangefield. He had been taken into custody on June 11, during sentencing in the 260th District Court for prior drug charges. He was to remain in the Orange County Jail while waiting for transport to a State facility. The Orange County Jail reported the incident to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards and the Texas Rangers, who conduct an independent investigation into all in custody deaths.
