BREAKING – Man arrested in hit and run fatality in Orange
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 9:30 pm, the suspect in the hit and run fatality on MacArthur Dr., turned himself in to the Orange Police Department. Carl Broussard, 53, of Vinton was arrested on two counts of leaving the scene of an accident after being interviewed by the OPD detective division. Leaving the scene of an accident is a second degree felony.
It was confirmed by a jail employee that Broussard is an assistant coach with the West Orange Cove CISD. The employee also said Broussard was being held on two $100,000 bonds, as well as a $404 bond and a $374 bond for two outstanding traffic warrants.
According to an affidavit, Broussard told detectives that he heard a thud, pulled over for a few seconds and then left the scene of the accident.
Ava Lewis and her daughter, six year old Lamya Newhouse, were struck and killed as they tried to walk across MacArthur Dr. Monday evening. Initial reports stated that after Broussard struck the two, he did not stop.
In a statement released by WOCCISD – the students and staff have all been deeply impacted by the loss of one of their students. The district is asking for privacy for the students and staff as they grieve. There will be no other statements released at this time.
