A 24-year-old man, identified as  Fausto Cardenas, fired several shots on the south steps of the Capitol, yesterday, with a small-caliber handgun. No one was injured in the incident that occured about 12:15 p.m.

Through coordinated efforts, DPS, local and federal agencies are impacting illegal drug trafficking operations along the border. One of the most noticeable trends is that law enforcement is disrupting the drug smugglers close to the border and in many cases, forcing them back across the Rio Grande.

Texans remain negative about the national economy and their personal economic situation, and still are not strongly engaged in the run-up to the 2010 statewide election, according to a statewide survey released today.

The poll, conducted by members of the Department of Government and the Texas Politics project at The University of Texas at Austin, surveyed 800 Texas residents between Feb. 24 and March 6.
