WOS ticket sales
The West Orange-Stark Varsity Football game against Friendswood, on Sept. 3, will be played at Deer Park Stadium at 7 p.m.
Tickets will only be on sale on Tuesday, Aug. 31 and Wednesday, Sept. 1 from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. in the athletic qffice. There WILL NOT be any ticket sales on Thursday or Friday this week. Ticket prices are $6 for adults and $3 for students. All tickets at the gate are $8. Please see the directions below.

Retired teachers
The Orange County Retired Teachers Association continues its membership drive. Dues are $30 per year, which includes state dues of $25 and local dues of $5. Crazy Jose’s hosts Baptist Orange benefit
Baptist Orange Hospital will team up with Crazy Jose’s restaurant in Orange on Tuesday, July 27, from 3-9 p.m. The restaurant, 110 Strickland Drive, will donate 15 percent of customers’ bills to Baptist Orange Hospital when they bring in a flier available in hospital lobby.
Fliers can be picked up near the Baptist Orange front desk during business hours at 608 Strickland.
“We are excited to partner with Crazy Jose’s for this fundraising event,” said Kristie Young, Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas Foundation executive director. “We invite the community to take this opportunity to support local hospital health care employees who take care of their loved ones throughout the year.”

KVLU to present special on Gulf oil spill
July 7 KVLU public radio (91.3 FM) will host a roundtable discussion on the Gulf oil spill, “Oil in the Gulf: A Discussion on Offshore Drilling,” with some of Lamar University’s brightest minds.
The program will air at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 7. The one-hour special, hosted by KVLU co-manager Byron Balentine, will feature insight from Jim Jordan, Jim Westgate and Paul Corder.
“Living on the Gulf Coast and having this tragedy take place near our area leaves many of us with questions,” Balentine said. “Hopefully, our distinguished panel can provide some answers.”

Feeding the Needy
The Bridge City/Orangefield food program, administered by St. Paul United Methodist Church, helps feed low income and needy families in BC/OF community. They are currently looking for more families to serve. For those interested, they distribute every first Thirsday of each month at the Community Center in Bridge City beginning at 8 a.m. Proof of residency is required and qualification for service will be determined at that time.

The Orange Public Library registration has begun for the 2010 Summer Reading Program, “Catch the Reading Express,” Wednesdays, June 9 through July 21. The library is offering a Read-to-Me program for children going into kindergarten and younger and a Texas Reading Club for those children going into the first through sixth grade.

OCP Young Peoples’ Workshop registration June 7
Registration for Orange Community Players’ annual Young Peoples’ Theater Workshop will be from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., this coming Monday, June 7. Registration price is $25 per student.
Auditions for the Workshop’s production will begin at 6 p.m., Monday, immediatly following registration. Students should come prepared to audition by reading out of the script or with prepared music if wishing to audition musically.
This years Workshop is entitled “Lost in American Glee,” an entertaining spoof of the TV shows “Lost,” “American Idol,” and “Glee.” Students ages 6-18 are eligible to register and audition, but space is limited.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 49, 108 Green Ave., offers bingo at 6:30 p.m. Sundays.
All proceeds are donated in Orange County. Food and drinks are available.

Community singing benefit
 Bridge City Orangefield Ministerial Alliance invites the public to attend a community singing service hosted by Second Baptist Church of Bridge City at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 31. Eleven churches will present Christian music by soloist and praise teams.
Proceeds will benefit the alliance’s children’s Christmas fund.

OCARC fishing tourney
The 23rd Orange County Association of Retarded Citizens’ Fishing Tournament will be Friday and Saturday, Aug. 6-7. Salt water fisherman can fish anywhere; freshwater must be within a 40-mile radius of Orange. Entry fee is $25. Thirty-one winners will be awarded in 11 categories. Winners receive cash and trophies. Big speck, bass, flounder and redfish garner $250 each, while second brings $100 and third pays $50. White perch, catfish, croaker, grinnel, rough fish and gar pays $100 for first, $50 for second and $25 for third. A $50 prize goes to the largest “Don Hubbard” mudcat. No 28-inch red fish are allowed. Redfish must be between 20-27 inches.

Food For Thought Luncheon
Make your reservations for the Food For Thought Luncheon, 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m., June 17 at Baptist Orange Hospital.
 Guest speakers are: Jarren Garrett, Chief Administrative Officer, Amy Townsend, M.D., Hospitalist and Christina Warlick, Case Manager.

Southeast Texas Stand Down 2010
 The Department of Veterans Affairs in conjunction with the Task Force for the Homeless and county Veterans Service Offices, including Orange County VSO, are sponsoring the Southeast Texas Stand Down 2010 scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, July 16, at the Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church, 3755 Fannett Rd., Beaumont. This year’s event focuses on homeless and homeless veterans in the Golden Triangle area. However, many service organizations are expected to participate. Booth space is free. Applications are available at the Orange County VSO.
“Stand Down” is a military terminology referring to a brief period when a soldier leaves a combat area for rest and recuperation. Southeast Texas Stand Down provides access to specialized resources to help homeless and homeless veterans. For more information, contact the Orange County VSO at 745-1535.

Shangri La open Memorial Day
In observance of Memorial Day, Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday, May 31.
Starting at 2:45 p.m., a special ceremony will begin with the singing of “America, The Beautiful” by Raegan Grantham, a Lamar University student. The Rev. Scott McIntosh of North Orange Baptist Church will then present a Memorial Day message and be followed with Ms. Grantham singing the “National Anthem.” McIntosh is also a military chaplain. There will be a moment of silence after ringing of the Great Bell at Shangri La and the ceremony will close with the playing of “Taps” by Rebecca Kent, also a student at Lamar.
