Helpful Hints

Last updated 1/27/2008 at Noon

I have a new look since last Wednesday.

It took me 20 months, but I grew 12 inches of long hair and cut ten off to send to the “Locks of Love” group.

Hopefully it will make some child a good wig.

While I was at the shop my friend told me her version of a good diet.

So I thought I would pass it along to you.

Every one needs a good laugh every once in a while.

If you eat a sandwich for lunch, make two fold over and you will have two instead of one.

Take a cup and divide your can soda in half and you’ll have two instead of one.

Take one Oreo, brake it in half and you’ll have two cookies instead of one.

Now all you have to do is convince yourself that you have had too much to eat.

I have a quick stew for the working mother.

Save some left over roast or cooked backbone stew meat, one tall can of vegetable soap, plus one can of water.

One can of whole cooked potatoes.

You might need to cut some of the potatoes in half.

Season to taste and heat all together.

They won’t think that you have been cooking all day, but it is quick and good.

I also have a hint for you when making Gumbo.

Our friend Carla told me she made a mean gumbo, but didn’t have a recipe to share.

She just made it up as she went.

She said the hardest part in making gumbo was the rue until she found it in a jar on the grocery shelf.

If you have discovered her secret, it makes a much smoother gumbo if you place the prepared rue in the water you intend to use and let it simmer for about an hour before placing other ingredients in it.

I also use the powdered rue for lots of things, it really makes good gravy.

My friend Joyce said that I should encourage you to go to Central Office Supply or Bridge City Cleaners in Bridge City or the VIdorian in Vidor to pick up one of my cookbooks.

After those 15 are gone it will not be in print again.

She thinks they would make a good Valentine gift. I have given them as wedding gifts.

Gooder’n Syrup.
