Lady Bobcats resume playoffs Tuesday
The Orangefield Lady Bobcats take their playoff show on the road again Tuesday night when they take on Navasota in the Region III quarterfinal round at 7 p.m. at Atascocita High School. Last Friday the Lady Bobcats cleaned the court with the LaGrange Lady Leopards in Kingwood with a 65-35 victory during the area round of playoffs.
The Lady Bobcats had a bye in the bidistrict round of the playoffs and were eager to get back on the hardwood Friday night after completing a near perfect 13-1 Dist. 21-3A season. The pregame mood was somber and serious.
“We’re just ready to get back into action,” said Lady Bobcat head coach Chris Jost before the game. It was apparent. When the opening buzzer sounded Orangefield unleashed fierce and furious playoff quality basketball against LaGrange.
It was a total team effort on the part of the Lady Bobcats who have now surpassed the area round of the playoffs for the third straight year. The past two seasons the team has reached the Region III finals but have failed to break the barrier into the state tournament. This season the Lady Bobcats under Coach Jost are gunning for regional title and more.
Nearly 300 Lady Bobcat fans attended the contest in Kingwood and they were all big on “Little”- Kaylin Little that is, who scored a game high 36 points with seven steals and four rebounds.
The Lady Bobcats were ruthless against their area round opponents. Defensively they attacked LaGrange forcing 23 turnovers and giving up a scant 35 points.
Along with Little’s game high scoring, Allie Beach posted six points to match six by Laura Riddick that included eight rebounds for both. Olivia Wagner scored five points against LaGrange and recorded seven rebounds. Lady Bobcat freshman Marissa Wyatt finished with five points that included a fourth period three-pointer. Jessica Weldon was all over the court defensively and on offense. She added four points to the Lady Bobcat scoring spree.
The Lady Bobcats now have Navasota in their sights as they move up the ladder ever closer to the Region III crown. Navosota defeated the Silsbee Lady Tigers 71-53 Friday night to come face to face with the Lady Bobcats Tuesday night.
If they prevail against Silsbee the Lady Bobcats will move on to the semifinal round Feb. 22. The Region III final is Feb. 23.
The 2008 Girls Basketball State Championships will take place Thursday, Feb. 28 – Saturday, March 1, at the Frank Erwin Center on the University of Texas campus in Austin.
