Cardinals and Bulldogs destined for winner-take-all
It is the destiny of rivals to come face to face in an arena for champions. The Bridge City Cardinals and the Jasper Bulldogs meet again. This time in a crucial Region III quarterfinal playoff game Friday in Nederland at 7:30 p.m.
Last season they met in the regional finals in a battle waged to the final inning of an unforgettable three game series. Jasper went on to become the Class-3A State Champions. But a rivalry was born in Region III baseball.
The two Dist. 21-3A opponents have already met twice this season and the Cardinals have prevailed in close contests. In district action Bridge City won 4-3 at home and recovered from a 5-0 deficit to win 7-6 in Jasper later in the season.
Of meeting Jasper for the third time Bridge City Cardinal head baseball coach Billy Bryant said, “It’s not so much that we are meeting Jasper again but that we are meeting them again in a deciding game of the playoffs. That’s one of the beauties of the game.”
In baseball it is appropriate.
Last week the Cardinals took out the Needville Blue Jays in an area round three game series. The Cardinals dropped Game One, 1-2, but came back to crush Needville in Game Two, 8-1, and Game Three, 9-3. The Jasper Bulldogs defeated Bellville in the first two games of their series, 7-5, 13-2.
