Cardinals can’t take Jasper in season finale
Several hundred high school baseball fans massed in a standing room only arena Friday night to witness the baseball game of the year. A young Bridge City Cardinal baseball team went to battle again against the Jasper Bulldogs in a "winner-take-all" Region III quarterfinal game. It was the third time Big Red and Jasper have met this season. Twice the Cardinals have prevailed. But not this night in Nederland.
The Bulldogs will advance to the semifinals next week after downing the Cardinals 5-1 in a heart breaker that ended a remarkable season for the Dist. 21-3A Champions and Region III area round winner over Needville.
It was the last time a trio of outstanding seniors wore the Cardinal uniform. The contributions of Casey Jackson, Jaden Dillon and Jason Clark have left their mark in the legacy and character of Bridge City baseball.
Cardinal sophomores pitcher Matt Hicks and shortstop Joe Robertson were big play makers for the Cardinals against Jasper. Hicks went the distance on the hill for the Cardinals strikong out eight. Robertson, rounded bases in a sprint to scored the lone run for Big Red.
It was practically three-up and three-down the first three innings of the contest.
In the top of the fourth, however, Joe Robertson singled and the Cardinals mounted an assault that caught Jasper off balance. Hicks followed with a double moving Robertson to third. With no outs, Jackson was walked loading the bases. Dillon’s sacrifice fly to right field sent Robertson speeding to home for the score. The inning ended with three Cardinals stranded on base. In the bottom of the inning Jasper smacked a two run homer pulling ahead 2-1.
In the fifth inning Cardinal sophomore Luke Rhodes singled but Bridge City went back on field without a score. Jasper scored three more runs for the game winning 5-1.
Hicks doubled in the sixth followed by a single by Jackson. Cardinal first baseman Blake Snyder was walked loading the bases. But Jasper managed to contain Bridge City base runners for a scoreless inning.
Jasper kept the Cardinals off bases their last time at bat. It was over.
